Kinton Old Number 1

Old Number 1 for 2 from £110 per night. Minimum 2 nights stay.

One double bed

As slow travel goes, this is probably the slowest – you’re not going anywhere fast in this old bus – and that’s exactly the point. Old Number 1 is perfect for a couple in search of a digital detox, with no wifi (though phone signal’s available) and a little slice of wild heaven all to yourselves. You can head out to take on the nearby activities, which could be anything from gliding, horse-riding or kayaking to wine tasting. But if you’ve come to escape, then you might prefer to cook in the outdoor kitchen on the BBQ, take on the walks from the front door, or just relax on the top deck, taking in the views, or spying the kites that’ve taken up residence in the tree opposite.

Old Number 1 was once one of five buses made specially for the narrow and twisty roads of The Isle of Man. After that, it became the tour bus for The Isle of Man stunt team, and was later found abandoned in a field – only to be restored and take on a new job as an artist’s liaison bus at festivals, hosting the likes of Blondie, Duffy, Ed Sheeran, and Little Mix to name a few. Now, in her retirement years, Old Number 1 is helping people find the peace and quiet she, and they deserve.
